Description

8 The Borough is a late 18th century or early 19th century house and shop that has been altered and extended in the 20th century. It is constructed of brick with roughcast render and has a slate roof.

The building has a rectangular plan and faces The Borough to the east. The principal elevation features stucco quoin detailing that extends from the ground to the first floor on the right-hand corner, while the left side lacks this detail and has an historic iron downpipe. At ground-floor level, there are two shopfronts separated by a recessed bay that has angled doors leading to the shops on either side, and a central door that provides access to the apartments. The shopfronts retain narrow glazing bars and a bulbous moulding below the glazing, likely dating to the early 20th century. Both shopfronts have similar doors with paneling in the lower half and glazing above, along with a glazed light overhead. The central door to the apartments is a late 20th century panelled door designed to resemble a historic door and is positioned slightly left of centre. Below the right-hand shopfront, there is a painted-over window to a basement. Above the shopfronts, a wide 20th century fascia extends across the full width of the façade.

At the first floor, there are three six-over-six sash windows arranged in four bays, with the third bay being blank, possibly indicating the location of the internal stair. Each window features a stucco lintel with angled headers and a central slightly enlarged keystone topped with a moulded cap. An iron pattress plate between the second and third windows suggests historic repairs. Four air vents with metal ornamental grilles have been added to the façade at roughly lintel level, likely in the early 20th century. At the second floor, there are three small three-over-three windows arranged similarly, with two on the left and one on the right of the blank bay. These windows do not have lintels. A moulded cornice runs above these windows for the width of the façade, though it is somewhat obscured by services and gutter supports.
