Description
The Toll House is a house and shop that was once used as a toll house, located on the east side of High Street in Lindfield. It was built with its gable end facing the road. The rear two bays date back to the 16th century and were originally jettied, while the front bay is from the early 17th century and was refronted in the 19th century. The building is timber-framed, with the rear part featuring close studding and plaster infill on the first floor, and painted brick on the ground floor. The front part has square panels with brick nogging, and the gable is weather-boarded. The front roof is covered with Horsham stone slabs, while the rear is tiled. The building is two storeys high. The gable front has a triple casement window from the 19th century on the first floor, and a tripartite sash window with 28 panes and a later door on the ground floor. The north elevation mainly features casement windows. There is a massive stepped external chimney stack on the east side, with a sandstone base and brown brick above.
