Description

Nos. 65 and 67 St Johns are two houses that were originally part of a terrace, with their upper floors combined to form one unit around 1988. They date from between 1780 and 1820 and have undergone later additions and alterations. The buildings are constructed of red brick with stone sills and feature a plain clay tile roof with two spans and dentilled eaves. There are end stacks with oversailing detail and pots.

The plan is double-depth with a central through-passage. The buildings are three stories tall and have a cellar. On the first floor, there are two windows, with 6/6 sash windows under flat gauged brick arches, and 3/3 sash windows on the second floor, all set in near flush-frames. The central entrance features a replacement six-panel door leading to the passage, framed by a doorcase with fluted pilasters, an incised design frieze, and a cornice.

The 19th-century shopfronts have plain pilasters, console brackets, and a cornice. The shopfront for No. 65 includes a recessed entrance on the left, with the left-reveal featuring eight flush-beaded panels and a splayed right-reveal. It has a part-glazed door with a flush-beaded bottom pair of panels, an overlight, and a large 1/1 sash shop window with a narrow transom ventilator that has vertical bars. The right shopfront has an entrance on the right with a part-glazed door and overlight, and a four-light window, with each light having a cambered head. The interior has not been inspected.
