Description
The entrance gates to Pontypool Park are a striking pair of early 18th century wrought iron gates, re-erected within an early to mid 19th century cast and wrought iron frame that includes additional gates and piers. These tall and attractive gates feature panel piers, an elaborate overthrow, and intricate decoration of foliage and armorial designs. This style of ironwork was first popularized by Jean Tijou at Hampton Court and later adopted by William Bakewell of Derby, William Edney of Bristol, and other craftsmen. The gates are flanked by clustered cast iron piers adorned with applied vines and leaves, topped with finials inspired by earlier designs. On either side, there are well-crafted foot gates, along with lower single piers that also display vine leaves. The overall composition is completed by a spear fence of lesser quality set on a dwarf stone wall.
