Description
Hatherleigh is a house located on Mere Pettridge Lane, built in the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed from coursed and squared limestone with a slate roof that has been treated with bitumen. The building consists of two sections, with the left side being lower and the right side higher, featuring a barge-board.
The house is two storeys tall and has a total of four windows on the ground floor, which are 12-pane sash windows. On the first floor, there are two 2-light glazing-bar casements, one of which is positioned high up near the eaves, along with two additional 12-pane sashes. All the sash windows are set flush with the outer wall and have decorative voussoirs above them.
The entrance features a good six-panel fielded door with a two-pane transom light, framed by an architrave and topped with a flat metal hood supported by decorative cast iron brackets. This door is located at the far left of the right-hand section of the house. There is a straight joint in the masonry that separates the two units. The return gable has a 12-pane sash window above a smaller light. The building is capped with two large brick gable stacks. There is a flat-roofed extension that is not of special interest. Together with No 1, Hatherleigh marks the boundary of pre-20th century development on this side of the town centre.
