Description
Court Mill is a former mill that has been converted into a house, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with later modifications in the 20th century. The building is constructed of ham stone in a near-ashlar style, topped with a plain clay tiled roof that features stepped coped gables and a stone chimney stack. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a three-bay north elevation. The windows are plain mullioned with beaded surrounds and shallow architraves, including some 20th-century replacements. The first bay has 3-light windows on both floors, while the second bay has 2-light windows on both floors, and the second floor of bay two features a 16-pane deep sash window. To the right of the lower bay one, there is a doorway with a matching surround, while the lower bay two is blind but shows signs of a former building that was attached. The lower bay three has a matching single-storey lean-to. The east gable, which also includes part of a rear outshut, has a 20th-century door and matching windows on both the ground and first floors, along with an earlier 3-light window in the attic. The mill was first recorded in 1573, although it is known to have existed by implication since 1556, and it ceased grinding operations in the 1930s.
