Description

This is a row of three cottages, possibly originally one house and then extended during the 17th and 18th centuries. The cottages are constructed of roughly cut and squared ham stone with ashlar dressings; number 42 has a colourwashed finish. The roofs are thatched with a stepped coped east gable, and there are brick chimney stacks. The cottages have two storeys and five bays in total.

Numbers 42 and 38 feature four-light hollow-chamfer mullioned windows recessed within chamfered surrounds, and have dripstones over the ground floor openings. Number 40 has a three-light horizontal-bar casement window. The first floor windows are matching casements, with 2, 3, 3, 2, and 3 lights respectively, with number 40 having only one upper window.

The original doorway was likely in the lower bay (bay 3), but in the 19th century doorways were created in bays 2, 3 (remaining left), and 5 (right). These doorways have simple boarded doors set in plain recesses, and lead up three steps. The east gable is offset and rendered. The interiors are not accessible for inspection.
