Description
The Swan Inn is an early 19th-century inn located on the south side of Lower Street in Merriott. The front facade is constructed of Ham stone ashlar, while the sides and rear are of coursed rubble. The roof is covered with Welsh slate, set between high stepped coped gables that suggest a former thatched roofline, and features brick end chimney stacks, one of which is rendered. The inn is two storeys high and has two bays. It has small-pane 3-light casement windows with voussoired flat-arched heads. A 20th-century porch with a slate roof and a part-glazed door has been added to the centre. The interior of the inn was not inspected during the listing process. The inn is attached to No. 42, but is set back and is included in the listing primarily for its group value. It was recorded as an inn by 1866, as documented in the Victoria County History of Somerset, Volume IV, published in 1978.
