Description
A semi-detached house dating to the late 17th or early 18th century, situated on Lower Street in Merriott. The building is constructed of Ham stone ashlar, with a double Roman clay tiled roof replacing a previous thatched roof; the east gable has a coped detail. The house is two storeys high with an attic, and originally had three bays. It features ovolo-mould mullioned windows set in wave-mould recesses. The ground floor windows in bays one and three have five and four lights respectively, with labels above. The first floor windows in bays one and three also have three lights, while bay two contains a later-inserted two-light casement within a chamfered recess. A six-fielded-panel door, with added toplights, is set within a plain chamfered opening with a label. Further ovolo-mould windows, some mullioned, are visible on the north-east gable, including a single light on the rear ground floor, two two-lights to the first floor, and two two-lights with labels in the attic. The interior of the house has not been inspected.
In front of the house, approximately two metres away, is a boundary wall constructed of near-ashlar stone and standing about one metre high, with angled coping. A gap in the wall, opposite the doorway, contains a cast-iron gate with spearpoint rails. The wall appears to be of similar construction to the adjacent wall at No. 53, suggesting they were possibly part of a larger, single dwelling in the past.
