Description
Knights Mill is a building that was originally likely a 14th-century fulling mill, which became a paper mill in the 18th century and is now a private house. The house itself is probably from the early 17th century but was refronted in the 18th century. To the left of the house is a mill building from the late 18th or early 19th century. The structure is made of coursed rubble stone with a concrete tile roof, featuring truncated end stacks on the front range and a part external stone stack on the 17th-century rear wing.
The main range has three storeys, while the earlier rear wing has two storeys and an attic. The single-storey mill building forms an L shape. On the second floor, there are three 9-pane sash windows. The first floor has four 2-light wood mullion windows with transoms, all featuring timber lintels. The ground floor includes two large 16-pane sash windows in flush stone surrounds, flanking a central stone doorcase that has a moulded architrave, frieze, cornice, and pediment. The door itself is recessed and has six panels, with the top four being glazed and the lower two being flush.
The rear wing features a 3-light stone mullion window with a square hoodmould on the first floor, facing into the angle of the building, above a large similar window with arched lights on the ground floor. The mill building has a paired casement window with a timber lintel over the mill leat that adjoins the house, and a wide 4-light casement window with a cambered head to the left.
