Description

This barn dates from the late 18th or early 19th century and is located at Court Farm in Quenington. The barn is a simple rectangular structure running roughly east-west, with a deep projecting porch added to the south and a small lean-to along part of the north side. It is constructed from random coursed limestone rubble with alternating flush quoins, and is roofed with blue slate.

The barn is two storeys high and features a pitched roof with coped verges punctuated by ball finials at the apex and regular rows of triangular ventilators on all walls. The main south elevation has a large two-story, hipped cart entry at its center, complete with double doors and a projecting hipped canopy supported by stone walls. A three-light timber window is located on the first floor. The rear elevation includes a flush entrance with double doors and a similar, shallower canopy, along with a small, single-story lean-to with an asbestos roof towards the west end. A square pitching hole, fitted with a wooden shutter, is situated at first-floor level on the east end.

Inside, the barn comprises six bays with trusses formed from principal rafters and collar beams, supplemented by cross bracing. A small chamber on the first floor of the projecting porch is accessible via a timber ladder.

The barn, part of a complex originally serving as the home farm for Quenington Court to the southeast, is associated with a listed dovecote situated between the farm and the Court. It is attached to a single-depth agricultural building likely dating from the later 19th century. Its Grade II listing reflects that it largely retains its original fabric, exhibits an unusually large cart entrance with a hipped roof, and demonstrates high-quality materials, construction, and detailing, including the decorative and functional triangular ventilation holes.
