Description

This milestone, located about 250 meters south of the junction with the A303, dates from the late 18th century. It is made of limestone and features a cast iron plate from 1840 fixed to the front. The plate has raised lettering that reads: WARMINSTER / 8 / SHAFTESBURY / 7, along the bottom are the initials C & M / W, indicating the Warminster ironfounders Carson and Miller. The stone pillar also has an incised date of 1787, which is visible below the cast iron plate. The road from Warminster to Shaftesbury was turnpiked as far as East Knoyle under an Act of 1726.
