Description

This is a milestone located opposite Sutton Veny County Primary School, dating from 1840. It is a cast-iron pillar designed in a classical style, featuring a low pedimented top. The front of the milestone has lettering that reads: WARMINSTER/TOWN HALL/3/MILES/CHILMARK/7. At the time of the survey in July 1985, the plinth was partly sunk but likely has the date 1840 and the initials C & M/W, which stand for Carson and Miller, a firm of iron founders from Warminster. They manufactured a series of cast-iron mileposts and boundary posts for the radial turnpike roads around Warminster around 1840.
