Description
Sutton Veny County Primary School is a primary school built between 1872 and 1873 by architect J.L. Pearson, with additions made in the 1890s and 1974. The building is constructed of dressed limestone and features a tiled roof and ashlar stacks. It has an 'L'-shaped plan with additional rear wings and a clock tower.
The entrance boasts a moulded pointed doorway at the base of a three-stage tower, which is supported by angle buttresses. The second stage of the tower has two square-headed lancets and a string course, while the bell stage features a pair of cusped lancets and a gilded clock face set in a roll-moulded pointed panel. The steep gabled roof is topped with a gabled bellcote made of ashlar, which retains the bell.
To the left and right of the entrance, there are wings that contain 2-light geometric-style windows with hoodmoulds, and the gable ends have 3-light geometric-style windows, also supported by angle buttresses. The rear of the building includes a range added in the 1890s, featuring two 3-light geometric-style windows and a double gabled roof. The roofs are finished with coped verges and ceramic ridge cresting.
There are 20th-century flat-roofed extensions attached to the left return, and well-designed extensions from 1974 attached to the rear. The interior has been altered over time.
