Description
The Sutton Veny War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is situated within the churchyard to the south of the Grade I-listed Church of St John the Evangelist.
The memorial is made of Portland stone and features a Latin cross fleurée, with curved elements between each cross arm. This cross sits atop a tapering octagonal shaft that has a moulded collar and foot, which rises from a square plinth with a three-stage tapering cap and moulded foot. The entire structure is supported by a three-stepped base.
The plinth includes inset panels that display the inscription and names, all of which are incised. The main inscription is located on the west side and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOUR OF THE MEN/ OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WARS/ 1914 – 1919/ 1939 – 1945." The north and south faces list 15 names from the First World War, while the east face shows the dates 1939 – 1945 along with 7 names.
