Description
Little Newnham is a detached house located on the west side of High Street in Sutton Veny. It dates from the late 17th century and early 18th century and is constructed of rubble stone and ashlar, with tiled or Welsh slated roofs and brick stacks. The building is two stories high and features six windows with varied designs, reflecting three different construction phases.
To the left of the late 17th-century right-hand section is a six-panelled door set in a chamfered rusticated surround. To the right are two 16-pane flush sash windows on both the ground and first floors, with the eaves raised in the early 19th century. The central early 18th-century section has two 12-pane sash windows on both floors; the ground floor windows are framed by moulded stone architraves with pulvinated friezes and pediments, while the first-floor windows are also in moulded stone architraves, complemented by chamfered rusticated quoins. The left section, built in the late 17th century, features two 2-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements and one 2-light casement on the ground floor, with two 3-light mullioned casements on the first floor. The right return has a blocked recessed chamfered light on the first floor.
At the rear, there is a 1930s bay window to the left, along with a half-glazed and planked door, casements, and sashes. The early 18th-century section includes a round-arched stair window with a keystone and both 2-light and 3-light mullioned casements.
Inside, the house features a baffle-entry into the late 17th-century right-hand range, which has chamfered beams with ogee stops. The early 18th-century range retains many original features, including dogleg stairs with two columnar balusters per open string tread, a moulded handrail, and turned newels with square finials. The ground floor room showcases fielded panelling, shutters, and a door with four fielded panels.
