Description
Chapel Field Barn is an early 19th-century field barn associated with Chapel Farm. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features a tiled roof. The barn has five bays and includes a stable attached to the east end. The north side has a one-meter-high brick plinth with weatherboarding above, and it features central double planked doors flanked by planked loading bays. The south side has a hipped porch with a planked door leading to a raised floor, along with an outshut that has rendered walls and a planked door to the left. The two-bay stable, which has a loft attached to the east gable end, includes planked doors and a lower roof. The west gable end is equipped with ventilation slits in the brickwork. At the time of the survey in August 1986, the interior was filled with hay, but it features a roof supported by queen post trusses. This barn is a good example of a 19th-century downland farmbuilding group, which includes a foldyard with the barn on the north side facing a shelter shed on the south, and a shelter belt of beech trees on the west side.
