Description

Upton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with a one-bay addition and a new roof added around 1870. It is constructed of dressed limestone and features a fishscale tiled roof with coped verges and brick and stone stacks, forming an L-plan structure. The building is two stories high with a four-window front. The central entrance door is from the 19th century, flanked by three-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements on either side, with an additional 19th-century mullioned casement to the right. On the first floor, there are three-light mullioned casements on either side of a two-light window above the door, along with a 19th-century three-light mullioned casement to the right. The 17th-century casements have leaded glass, while the 19th-century ones are made of cast iron with lattice work.

To the left of the building, there is a lean-to brick shed with a blocked single-light recessed chamfered light in the attic. The right side features a blocked doorway and 20th-century renewed mullioned windows, along with one 19th-century cast iron casement on the first floor. The rear of the farmhouse has a glazed door and two 2-light leaded casements on the ground floor, with a three-light casement on the first floor. There is also a late 19th-century two-storey rear wing connected to the main range by a first-floor passage supported on posts, featuring cast iron mullioned casements or 20th-century casements.

Inside, the farmhouse contains two open fireplaces with stone jambs; the northern fireplace has a reused deeply chamfered beam with joist mortices, while the southern lintel features a reused 17th-century chamfered beam. The interior also includes chamfered beams with ogee stops, although most of the joinery is from the 19th century. Upton Farmhouse was part of the Seymour family estate, sold to the Wyndhams in 1876, and later became part of the Clouds estate.
