Description
Old Penny Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of dressed limestone and features a tiled roof, which was formerly thatched, along with coped verges and gable end brick stacks. The cottage is two stories high with three windows across the front.
The central entrance has a gabled stone porch with a coped verge and a cross finial, leading to a planked door. On either side of the porch are three-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements. The first floor has three-light mullioned casements on either side of a two-light mullioned casement, all of which are leaded. The left side of the cottage has a lean-to extension with a single leaded casement, while the right side features a two-light mullioned casement in the attic. At the rear, there is a central planked door with a single-light casement above it on the first floor.
Inside, the cottage has a blocked open fireplace with a cambered chamfered lintel set on stone jambs, along with chamfered beams. There is a barrel vaulted passage next to the fireplace that connects the extension to the main house. The first floor includes deep chamfered beams and moulded panelling, likely from the early 18th century, in the passage, as well as a plank and muntin beside the stairs, which is now covered.
