Description
The Homestead is a detached cottage located in East Knoyle, dating from the late 17th century, with an extension added in the early 18th century. The building features English bond brick with vitrified headers on the front, dressed limestone on the returns, and a thatched roof with brick stacks. It is a single-storey structure with an attic and has three windows.
The 18th-century extension on the right includes a four-panelled door and a two-light leaded casement window, with a lozenge diaper pattern in vitrified headers at the center. The 17th-century section on the left has two-light and three-light leaded casements, along with three eyebrow dormers in the attic, and the roofline of this section is lower than that of the extension. There is also a 19th-century single-storey extension at the left end, which features a three-light wooden casement and a tiled roof.
At the rear, the cottage has a three-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement and a blocked doorway leading to the 17th-century range. The 18th-century brick range includes a two-light casement and a two-light wood mullioned casement, with two eyebrow dormers that have a two-light leaded casement and a two-light 19th-century casement.
Inside, there is a blocked open fireplace with a chamfered lintel set on brick jambs, along with chamfered beams and planked doors. The 18th-century drawing room features a chamfered beam with stepped stops, a well-crafted corner cupboard with a keystone and imposts supporting a round arched head, and shaped shelves with moulded panelling on either side and below.
