Description
Milton House is a detached house dating from the early 18th century, situated in East Knoyle. It is constructed of dressed limestone with a tiled roof featuring coped verges and gable end brick stacks. The house is arranged in an L-shape with a later wing added to the east side. It is two storeys and has an attic, with a five-window front. The central entrance features a six-panelled door with a transom light, sheltered by a flat wooden hood supported on cast iron brackets. Flanking the door are two wooden cross windows with relief carved keystones. The first floor has five similar wooden cross windows, also with carved keystones, the centre window being segmental-headed; all window leads were replaced in the 20th century. Two hipped dormers with steel casements light the attic. The right return side shows a single-light leaded casement, while the left return has leaded casements. The rear includes an outshut with a central hipped dormer, an early 18th century wing to the right, and an early 20th century wing to the left, all with casements.
Inside, the house has a central staircase with two turned balusters per open string tread, a wide moulded handrail, and an original wooden dog gate at the foot. The dining room, to the right of the entrance, contains painted recessed moulded panelling, cupboards with shaped shelves, and a double arched-headed fireplace with eared surrounds. The ceiling displays a moulded plaster cornice and ribbed plaster panels with scrolled and floral motifs. The drawing room, to the left, has a similarly eared fireplace, which may not be original. A study in the rear wing features a chamfered beam and a chamfered stone fireplace. Some original doors with two fielded panels remain on the first floor. The attic has a four-bay roof.
A dressed limestone wall attached to the front right has saddleback coping that sweeps up over the doorway and end piers with ball finials, along with low brick dwarf walls topped with cast iron spearhead railings and a single gate.
