Description
Strongs Cottage is a detached cottage dating from 1734, as indicated by the datestone above the door, which features incised scrolled decoration. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone and has a thatched roof with brick stacks at the gable ends. It is two stories high and has a two-window front. To the left of center, there is a four-panelled sham door set within a 20th-century gabled porch, with a two-light casement window to the left and a combination of a 6-pane fixed window and a two-light casement to the right. On the first floor, there are two two-light casements. An English bond brick extension with a tiled roof and casements is attached to the left side of the cottage. The rear features French windows, a two-light casement on the ground floor, and another two-light casement on the first floor. Inside, there is an open fireplace with a lintel supported by stone jambs, a planked door, and chamfered beams. This cottage may have been the home of Edward Strong junior, the son of Edward Strong senior, who was the senior mason to Sir Christopher Wren and died in 1724.
