Description

The Church of St Peter is an Anglican parish church located in East Knoyle, which is now closed. The church dates back to the 13th century, underwent restoration in 1812, and was rebuilt in 1872. It is constructed from flint rubble stone with limestone dressings and features tiled roofs with fishscale tile bands and coped verges. The building consists of a nave and chancel under a single roof, a north aisle, a south porch, and a west bellcote.

The gabled south porch is partly timber-framed, while the nave and chancel to the right have three 2-light pointed windows with cusped lights and buttresses with offsets. The east end showcases a 19th-century 2-light window in a geometric style, set back buttresses, and a coped verge with a cross finial. At the time of the survey in August 1986, the north side of the chancel and the north aisle from 1872 were completely covered in ivy, obscuring details. The west end features a gabled bellcote.

The interior was not accessible during the survey, but photographs are available in the National Monuments Record. The church has 19th-century roof trusses in the 2-bay chancel and 2-bay nave, a continuously chamfered chancel arch, and a 2-bay north arcade in the style of the 13th century. Some fittings have been removed, but it is said to still contain pews and wall tablets dedicated to the Sheldon family, as well as floor tablets for the Mervyn family. There is a 14th-century piscina with a moulded pointed arch and a hoodmould featuring a mask terminal to the right. The chapel likely dates back to the 12th century and was annexed as a chapel of ease to Chicklade in 1899. The church was reported to be in very poor condition at the time of the survey, with part of the roof having fallen in.
