Description
Chicklade House, located at Chicklade Place, is a country house that has been converted into three separate homes. It was originally built in the mid-18th century and was extended and had its windows changed in the mid-19th century. The structure is made of limestone ashlar and features chamfered quoins from the original build, topped with a tiled hipped roof and ashlar stacks that have moulded cappings.
The building is two stories high and has eleven windows. On the right side, Chicklade Place has an 8-panelled door with a flat stone hood, accompanied by two 12-pane sash windows to the right and a Venetian window in the left-hand projecting bay. The Well House, located in the center, features a door with 8 fielded panels set in a porch supported by Corinthian columns, along with a 9-pane sash window and a Venetian window to the right. To the left, Chicklade House has double doors leading to a projecting bay, flanked by Venetian windows on both sides and two 6-pane sashes to the left.
The first floor includes plat bands and four Venetian windows, a 10-pane semi-circular headed stair window in the center, and 12-pane sashes set in moulded architraves. The two projecting bays are topped with pedimented gables, while the two bays on the left are plain and date from the early 19th century. The rear of the building has gabled wings with sash windows, and the left return features a two-storey bay with casement windows to the left. The interior was not accessible during the survey in August 1986, but it is reported to have undergone alterations during the conversion into three separate dwellings in the 1970s.
