Description

Holton Place is a substantial house that has been divided into three dwellings. It dates from the early to mid-18th century, with later additions from the late 18th century and mid-19th century. The building is constructed from limestone rubble and ashlar, featuring plain-tile and Welsh-slate roofs. It has a long irregular plan and consists of one storey plus attics and two storeys.

The front elevation includes, on the right, a four-window range from the 18th century, which has small-pane and leaded three-light casements along with dormers. The two bays to the left have brick quoins and flat arches. The central two bays project significantly and feature a steep-pitched gable and a shallow hipped gable. Both of these bays have Gothick windows with triple-arched stone heads. The doorway, located in a brick extension on the right, has a similar arched head.

To the left of the central bays is a mid-19th century ashlar two-storey range, which has two small gables above arched first-floor windows with honeycomb glazing bars. The ground floor features a large canted bay window with triple-arched heads, clustered-shaft mullions, and a pendant cornice, next to a porch that has a four-centre arched doorway. At the extreme left is a slightly later single-storey ashlar addition with clasping pilasters. Its end wall displays three Gothick arched windows and a central gable with a pierced serpentine bargeboard and elaborate pendants.

Inside, Holton Place House contains an inserted late 17th-century stair with widely spaced heavy turned balusters. The interiors of Holton Place and Old Place have not been inspected. Originally, the building was a single dwelling known as Holton Place and was part of the Holton Park estate.
