Description
A country house, largely dating from around 1820, with late 18th-century origins. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and has a hipped roof covered in stone slate, with stone stacks. The house is three stories high and has a three-window front. A central semi-circular portico with Tuscan columns supports a double door with half-glazed panels, flanked by a pair of 12-pane sash windows. A plat band runs along the first floor, above which is a central 12-pane sash window with a pair of sashes on either side. A similar plat band and windows are found on the second floor, topped by a moulded cornice to a plain blocking course. The left return has five tall 12-pane sashes on the ground floor, a plat band above, followed by five sashes on the first floor, and another plat band above with five 9-pane sashes. A moulded cornice and blocking course complete this return. The rear of the house has an irregular arrangement of windows, mainly sashes, but with a blocked mullioned window to the left of three gables. A straight joint indicates that the left-hand bay is of earlier construction. The right return has a mix of 2-light cyma-mullioned casements and sashes, with a later two-story wing on the right partially obscuring a second-floor mullioned casement. A stable is attached to the gable end of this wing, featuring a central planked door with flanking lunettes, and a pierced oculus to a dovecote above. The interior retains early 19th-century joinery, including six-panelled doors set in reeded architraves with rosettes, window shutters, a staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed moulded handrail linking the first and second floors, and a later staircase from the ground floor to the first floor. Several rooms feature reeded marble fireplace surrounds with paterae on both the ground and first floors.
