Description
Milestone at the top of Lord's Hill, dating from 1840, is a cast-iron pillar featuring a classical pedimented top and plinth. The lettering is in relief and reads: WARMINSTER/5/MILES/SHAFTESBURY/10/MILES. The initials C & M/W 1840 on the plinth indicate the Warminster ironfounders, Carson and Miller. This milestone is part of the radial turnpike system established around Warminster in 1726, with a series of cast-iron milestones produced around 1840, coinciding with a consolidation of the Turnpike Act.
