Description

Milestone located against the rear wall of Milestone Cottage in Sutton Veny, Tytherington Village, dating from 1840. This milestone is a cast-iron pillar designed in a classical style, featuring a pedimented top. The front of the pillar is inscribed with the distances: WARMINSTER/TOWN HALL/4/MILES/CHILMARK/6/MILES. It is part of a series of cast-iron milestones on roads leading from Warminster, produced by the ironfounders Carson and Miller. These milestones are typically dated 1840 and often bear the initials C & M/W on the plinth, although this particular milestone was partly sunk at the time of the survey in July 1985, making the initials not visible.
