Description

This milepost, located about 100 metres north of the Swan Inn, dates from 1840. It is a cast-iron pillar designed in a classical style, featuring a low pedimented top and a plinth. The front of the milepost has raised lettering indicating the distances to Salisbury (6 miles) and Warminster (15 miles). It is part of a series of cast-iron mileposts produced by Carson and Miller, a firm of ironfounders based in Warminster, intended for the turnpikes that radiate from Warminster.
