Description
The milepost at the south entrance to the Hillside Cafe dates from around 1840. It is made of cast iron and features a classical pillar design with a pedimented top. The front of the milepost has raised lettering indicating the distances to Salisbury (15 miles) and Warminster (6 miles). At the time of the survey in March 1987, the lower half of the milepost was sunk into the ground. This milepost is part of a series of cast iron mileposts and boundary posts on turnpikes radiating from Warminster, produced by the local ironfounders Carson and Miller.
