Description

A former toll house and tollbooth, built circa 1836 in Tudor style at No. 6 Upton Lovell. The toll house was designed by Mr Pinch of Bath and built by Williams Trapp. It became a private dwelling in 1870. The tollbooth was built to house a weighing machine. Both structures are constructed of limestone, brick and slate.

The toll house has a cruciform plan aligned north-west to south-east, with a single storey to the front (east) and two storeys to the rear (west). The main entrance is set within a central projecting bay beneath a timber porch on stone footings, topped by a stone pinnacle and slate roof. The entrance comprises a pair of part-glazed timber doors surrounded by a chamfered four-pointed ashlar stone arch. The right and left returns have single-light openings. All original openings are rectangular with mullions and drip moulds, now containing modern sash-style timber windows. The central bay is flanked by wings with two-light openings (boarded up internally). The north and south elevations each contain two-light openings and a glazed arrow slit above. The two-storey rear elevation features a central projecting gable with two-light openings on both floors, flanked by two wings. The left wing includes a chamfered square entrance to a former stable block and two modern single-light windows with a modern two-light opening above. The right wing is partially obscured by a modern single-storey conservatory, behind which is a modern doorway to the lower ground floor with a modern two-light opening above. Gables on all four principal elevations are finished with stone coping supported by moulded kneelers and topped by stone pinnacles. The slate pitched roofs are topped by a central ridge stack with four square brick and stone shafts. The south and north wings each have roof lights in the western roof pitch.

The interior has been largely modernised with some additional door openings made in the 20th and 21st centuries. The entrance hall has a flagstone floor and an arched niche in the rear wall for securing toll payments, containing an inbuilt timber cupboard. An early 21st-century central staircase (replacing a mid-20th-century stair in the same position) rises to the attic voids beneath the north and south wings. An exposed kingpost truss spans above the hall. The lower ground floor is accessed via a central stone staircase and retains a large proportion of flagstone flooring. It includes two barrel-vaulted rooms: a former stable (now a dining room) and a cellar (now a kitchen). An exposed brick fireplace is present in the lower ground-floor room within the south wing.

The tollbooth is a small rectangular building facing south-west. Its principal gable end faces west towards the road and contains a four-pointed arch entrance with a drip mould. The north elevation holds a rectangular three-light casement window set in a stone surround, topped by a drip mould. The rear (east) elevation shows signs of some replacement stone. Stone coping over both gable ends is topped by stone pinnacles. The interior contains a concrete floor and a 20th-century timber bench.

The toll house underwent alterations in the 20th and 21st centuries. The tollbooth has been used as a bus shelter since the second half of the 20th century. The conservatory attached to the rear of the toll house, the detached modern garage to the south, and the stone boundary wall to the east are excluded from the listing.
