Description

The Old Rectory is a late 17th-century rectory, extended in the early 19th century and now a detached house. It is located on the north side of Upton Lovell village. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick on a moulded plinth, with chamfered stone quoins and stone dressings. It has a tiled roof with a two-span design covering two parallel ranges. The main facade is two storeys high with five windows. A central 6-panelled door is set within an eared stone architrave, with a transom light above. Flanking the door are two cross windows, also within eared architraves. A stone plat band runs along the first floor level, above which are five cross windows, all within eared architraves; none of these retain original glazing bars. The right return features two external stacks with offsets, along with a pivot-hung window and a single casement window on the first floor. A 19th-century lean-to is attached to the right return. The left return has a 12-pane sash window to the ground floor and two 12-pane sashes to the first floor. The rear includes a 19th-century rubble stone range with a central glazed door, two 12-pane sashes on either side, and five sashes to the first floor, finished with a dentil brick eaves cornice. Internally, the south-east and north-east sitting rooms have reeded 19th-century fireplaces. The front range contains shutters with fielded panels and some doors with two fielded panels. First floor beams are deeply chamfered with run-out stops, and the roof is a six-bay late 17th-century design with collars. The property ceased to be occupied as a rectory in 1948.
