Description

Ashton Gifford House is a country house built in the late 18th century. It features a front made of limestone ashlar, with brick returns and a flat roof topped with ashlar stacks. The building is three stories high and has a central block with three windows that projects forward, flanked by two-storey side bays of the same height. At the center, there is a Tuscan portico with two columns, which has double half-glazed doors and tripartite sash windows on either side. The inner door consists of six fielded panels, and there are fanlights along with round-arched sashes that have interlaced glazing bars. The ground floor of the central block is rusticated.

On the first floor, there are three 9-pane sash windows, while the second floor features a plat band and three 6-pane sashes. The two-storey side bays have 8-pane margin sashes and a plat band. A moulded cornice leads to a plain stone parapet adorned with 20th-century pineapples. The right return has a 20th-century flat-roofed extension and a fire escape, which was removed in 2010, neither of which is of special interest. It also has margin-pane sashes on the first floor. The left return includes French windows, an 8-pane margin sash, and 20th-century windows.

At the rear, the two central bays project forward and have 12-pane sashes on the ground floor, 9-pane sashes on the first floor, and 6-pane sashes on the second floor, while the side bays have 8-pane margin sashes on the ground and first floors.

Inside, there is a central entrance hall featuring an oval open-well staircase with a continuous handrail and cast-iron balusters. The house boasts good joinery throughout, including six-panelled doors in panelled reveals with moulded architraves and window shutters. The southeast drawing room is notable for its scrolled plaster ceiling margin and a white marble fireplace. Other rooms also have plaster ceiling friezes and marble fireplaces.

Ashton Gifford House was used as a school from the 1940s to the 1980s.
