Description

This is a milepost located on the Warminster Road in South Newton, dating from 1840. It is made of cast iron and features a low pedimented top. The lettering on the milepost indicates distances to Salisbury (5 miles) and Warminster (16 miles), although the distance to Warminster is not visible due to the subsidence of the plinth. This milepost is part of a series of cast-iron mileposts that were installed on radial turnpikes around Warminster and along the A36, manufactured by the local ironfounders, Carson and Miller.
