Description
The South Newton War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes additions for the Second World War. It is situated near the western boundary of the churchyard of the Grade II listed Church of St Andrew.
The memorial features a stone, wheel-head cross atop a tapering, square column with a moulded cap and foot. This column rises from a four-sided plinth that stands on a two-stepped, square base. The plinth is inscribed with names and dedications in incised lettering.
The main inscription is located on the west face of the plinth and reads: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918" followed by eight names. Additionally, there is an inscription on the west face of the top step of the base that states: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
The dedication for the Second World War is found on the south face of the plinth, reading "1939 - 1945" followed by four names.
