Description
Milestone Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the mid-17th century, with a rebuild or extension to the west in 1747. It is constructed of rubble stone and square-panelled timber framing with brick nogging, and has a thatched roof with a hip to the west and a half-hip to the east end, alongside brick gable end stacks. The eastern part of the cottage is a two-bay timber-framed build, while the western two bays appear to be a rebuild or extension in dressed limestone. The cottage is single-storey with an attic, and has a three-windowed front facing the garden. It features casement windows, with two planked doors to the left and right of the front, a C20 casement to the left, and a two-light casement to the right. The attic has a two-light and one three-light casement to the timber-framed build, while the west build has a two-light casement to the first floor. The left return has no windows, whereas the right return features an external brick and stone stack with offsets, a two-light and a three-light casement to the timber-framed build, and two two-light casements to the 18th-century build. A datestone with βTA/1747β is incised below the first-floor casement on the right return. The interior contains chamfered beams with stepped and run-out stops, with the east beam supported on chamfered posts with run-out stops. There are planked doors, one with two fielded panels, an open fireplace with a timber lintel supported on stone jambs, and a semi-circular bread oven to the west.
