Description

Sorrel Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations made around 1700 and in the 20th century. It is constructed of rubble stone with bands of flint and limestone to the front, and with Flemish bond brickwork to the first floor. The roof is thatched, with gable end brick stacks. The entrance is now on the left return. The front of the cottage has two storeys and two windows. The ground floor has a two-light casement window and a three-light casement window, both with flat brick arches. The first floor has two two-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement windows, and a vertical timber brace is fixed against the front wall. A 20th-century single-storey extension with a hipped roof projects from the left return, incorporating a single-light casement window to the first floor; earlier, lower roof lines are visible in the brickwork. A flat-roofed 20th-century extension at the rear is not of special interest, and there are 20th-century dormers. The interior features deeply chamfered beams with run-out stops, and an open fireplace at the west end with a cambered chamfered lintel set on stone jambs. The cottage was originally a single-storey building, with the eaves raised around 1700.
