Description

This is a mile post located about 150 metres east of the junction with Park Lane, dating from 1840. It is made of cast iron and features a classical style with a rectangular shape and a low pedimented top. The lettering on the post is partly defaced, but it reads "WARMINSTER/4/SALISBURY/17." The plinth of the post bears the initials "C & M/W," which likely represent the firm Carson and Miller, ironfounders in Warminster since 1820. Although radial turnpikes around Warminster were established in 1726, this mile post is part of a series produced in 1840 following a Turnpike Act that consolidated the roads radiating from Warminster.
