EAST KNOYLE WARMINSTER ROAD ST 83 SE (west side) 8/68 Milepost about 125 metres north of junction with lane to Milton GV II Milepost. 1840s. Cast iron classical-style pedimented pillar with raised lettering to front: WARMINSTER / 9 / MILES / SHAFTESBURY / 6 / MILES. One of a series of cast iron mileposts on turnpikes radiating from Warminster, made by Carson and Miller, ironfounders in Warminster. Warminster to Shaftesbury road was turnpiked as far as East Knoyle under a 1726 Act. (VCH, Wiltshire, Vol 4, 1959; R. Haynes, Wiltshire Milestones, Leisure in Wiltshire, 1968)
