Description

This is a milepost located about 125 metres north of the junction with the lane to Milton, dating from the 1840s. It is made of cast iron and features a classical-style pedimented pillar with raised lettering on the front that reads: "WARMINSTER / 9 / MILES / SHAFTESBURY / 6 / MILES." This milepost is part of a series of cast iron mileposts on turnpikes that radiate from Warminster, produced by Carson and Miller, ironfounders in Warminster. The road from Warminster to Shaftesbury was turnpiked as far as East Knoyle under an Act from 1726.
