Description
The barn at Manor House is a structure dating from around 1600. It features a rubble stone plinth with a weatherboarded timber frame and a tiled roof that has a hip on the right side. The barn consists of fourteen bays, with the western bay now incorporated into the house. On the south side, there are three hipped porches, each with double planked doors, and an added outshut under a catslide roof that includes planked stable doors. The north side has small planked doors and blocked cart entries.
Inside, the barn has collar and tie-beam trusses with raking struts to the principals and a lower tier of through purlins. There is curved bracing from the jowled main posts to the tie-beam, along with two tiers of through purlins. Some timber bracing was inserted in the early 20th century to prevent the westward movement of the roof trusses. The fourteenth west bay is separated from the main barn by a square-panelled timber-framed partition with herringbone brick nogging. This barn is a fine example of a large agricultural building associated with an important manor, which was formerly a moated site.
