22 AND 23, NEW ROAD

22 and 23 New Road are a pair of mid-19th century houses located in Chippenham, with their entrances on Old Road. No. 23, which is on the left, was enlarged in the late 19th century. The front of the houses is constructed from limestone ashlar, while the rear features rubblestone and render. They have a shallow-pitched slate roof, with a coped gable on the right side. The late 19th-century addition to No. 23 has a hipped roof at the front and a gabled roof at the rear, along with an ashlar stack on the left return.

The houses are two storeys tall, with the late 19th-century block reaching three storeys. Each house has a three-window range. No. 22, on the right, is symmetrical and features a cornice, parapet, eaves band, pilasters, raised surrounds to its 6/6-pane sash windows, and rusticated surrounds to various windows at the rear. No. 23 originally mirrored this design, but the left two bays have been replaced by a late 19th-century three-storey wing, which includes paired plate-glass windows at the front, paired 9/1 sash windows, and a gabled single-storey extension at the rear. The interior has not been inspected. These houses are part of a group built after the arrival of the railway in 1840-41.
