Description

Numbers 33 and 34 are a pair of semi-detached houses that have been converted into commercial premises. They were built in the mid-19th century and are constructed from limestone ashlar with a slate roof and moulded ashlar stacks on both the front and rear slopes of the party wall. The buildings have a double-depth plan and are two storeys high, featuring a symmetrical design with each house having a two-window range. There is a plain eaves band and pilasters at the corners and along the party wall. A continuous moulded string course runs along the top, terminating in hoods on brackets over the outer windows. The doors, which are from the 20th century, have overlights above them. The windows are plate glass, set beneath segmental arches with keystones and bracketed sills. The front gardens are enclosed by low freestone walls and gate piers that have incised panels and dentilled cornices on swept caps. This pair of houses is part of a group built on New Road following the arrival of the railway in 1840-41.
