Description

Numbers 132 and 134 are a pair of attached houses dating to 1842. They are built of limestone ashlar with party wall stacks, and have a roof that is not visible. The houses have a double-depth plan and are in a Neoclassical style. Each house is two storeys and an attic, with a two-window range. The symmetrical front elevation features two-storey, parapeted side blocks set back, with quadrant porches in the re-entrants. Carved bands at the first floor depict anthemia, a frieze, and a dentil cornice. There is a coped attic storey with a small pediment on the right-hand side, and a recessed party wall strip. The open porches have fluted Ionic columns to the entablature. The inner doorways are flanked by side and over lights, with stained glass to number 134, leading to six-panel doors. Windows are set in recessed surrounds and include an open timber verandah on square columns with a cornice. The ground floor windows are tripartite with 6/9-pane sashes; the verandah to number 134 is glazed. The upper floor windows have 6/6-pane sashes, and the attic windows have 3/3-pane sashes. Small, curved conservatories from the 19th century are located above the porches. The interior features a stair hall, a side open-well staircase with cast-iron balusters, a curtail and wreathed and ramped handrail, a marble fireplace with fluted sides, six-panel doors, panelled shutters, and a cornice. The attached front garden has rubble walls, rendered piers, and wrought-iron two-leaf gates. These houses have been described as “especially well and quietly detailed.”
