Description
Carlton Mansions, on Carlton Terrace, is a terrace of eight houses built around 1842. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with party wall stacks, and have a roof that is not visible. They follow a double-depth plan, with three storeys, an attic, and a basement, each house originally featuring a two-window range. The terrace is divided by recessed party walls and has a rusticated ground floor leading to a moulded string, a frieze with panelled blocks, and a cornice, topped by a coped attic. The left-hand side features moulded, semicircular-arched doorways with plate-glass fanlights and two-panel doors; number 28 has a two-storey entrance block set back at the end with a teardrop fanlight. The ground floor has tripartite windows, and the upper floors have plate-glass sash windows. Tented balconies with cast-iron railings and anthemia embellish the first floor. Numbers 22 to 26 were remodelled around 1900 into a block of flats, resulting in a symmetrical elevation with a central, full-height stair block. This stair block is adorned with fluted consoles supporting wreaths above a doorway containing a panel inscribed “Carlton Mansions,” and leading to a two-leaf door. The upper windows are contained within enveloping architraves with a swagged panel between, set in a recess, and feature 6/6-pane sashes. There are two ground-floor windows on each side of the flats, with narrow 9/9-pane sashes above, and 6/6-pane sashes in the attic. The interior of the buildings has not been inspected.
