Description

Numbers 1 to 16 Buckingham Place is a terrace of 16 houses built between 1843 and 1845 by RS Pope. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar, with party wall stacks and a pantile double-pile roof. They are arranged with a double-depth plan, three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with each house having a two-window front.

The terrace is composed and irregularly stepped, featuring recessed party walls. The ground floor incorporates banding, a second-floor sill band, a frieze, a cornice, a coped attic, and coped party walls. The five houses at each end have recessed first floors behind a stone colonnade featuring paired, panelled columns supporting an entablature.

The front doors have panelled jambs and lintels with overlights featuring margin panes, and are accompanied by two-panel doors. The windows are generally tripartite, with architraves above, and include 6/6-pane sashes, 3/3-pane attic sashes, some casements. The taller first-floor windows have a stone balcony supported by cast-iron brackets and rails, and the colonnade is similarly detailed.

The interiors feature halls with semicircular arches leading to dogleg stairs, which include turned balusters, and cornices.

Attached to the front of the terrace are cast-iron area railings and two pairs of gate piers with round tops and sunken panels. The terrace is associated with Pope's adjoining Buckingham Chapel and shares details with his Vyvyan Terrace.
