Description
46 and 47 New Road are a pair of mid-19th century houses located in Chippenham. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature a fully-hipped slate roof with a moulded stack at the apex. The houses have double-depth plans and are two storeys tall with basements. The design is symmetrical, with each house having a two-window range. Architectural details include an eaves band, a plinth, and pilasters at the corners and along the party wall. The basement windows have stone mullions and are designed as two-light openings. The outer houses have steps leading up to their doors, which are topped with overlights and shallow hoods supported by brackets. No. 46, on the right, has plate-glass sash windows and a 20th-century door, while No. 47 features 6/6-pane sash windows and a four-panel door that is glazed at the top. The interior has not been inspected. These houses are part of a group built on New Road following the arrival of the railway in 1840-41.
