Description

A pair of houses dating from the mid-19th century, located in Chippenham. They were built after the arrival of the railway in 1840-41, and are part of a group of houses along New Road. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar with a hipped slate roof, wide eaves, and a moulded ashlar stack at the apex. They are arranged with double-depth plans and feature a symmetrical facade. Each house has a 2-window range. Details include an eaves band, platband, plinth, and pilasters to the corners and party wall. The windows are mostly sash windows with 6/6 panes, with one plate glass window on the first floor of the right-hand house. The houses have semicircular arched porches with roll-edge moulding; the four-panel doors are complemented by fanlights, the fanlight to the right-hand door having radial glazing bars. The interiors were not inspected.
