Description
The Tollgate Inn is a building located on Southampton Road, dating from the 17th or 18th century. It stands on a corner site with St Martin's Church Street and was formerly known as the New Inn. The inn is two storeys high with an attic and is constructed of painted brick, topped with a steep gable end roof covered in old tiles.
The front facing St Martin's Church Street features four windows on the first floor, one of which is blind, all of which are flush architrave framed sashes with intact glazing bars. There is an entrance and a bar window in a single-storey extension that has a weatherboarded upper part, which may have been a former carriageway.
On the gable end facing Southampton Road, there is one window in the gable, two on the ground floor, and one on the first floor, all of which are flush architrave framed sashes. The ground floor windows were formerly doorways. At the rear, there is a taller early 19th-century section with a hipped tiled roof, which has three windows on the first floor and a tripartite sash on the ground floor. Additionally, there is a stable wing that features hatches and double doors.
The Tollgate Inn is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 7 (odd) St Martin's Church Street.
