Description
No 82, The Old Surgery and 84, Spire View, is a building with origins in the first half of the 18th century and a later 18th-century front. It stands three storeys high and is constructed of colour-washed brick. The facade features a stone frieze with fluting above the windows and roundels in between, along with a bracketed central panel that displays a carved urn and swags. A small moulded cornice and a rendered parapet with a central panel of balusters and piers divide the facade into two sections, topped by an old tile hipped roof.
The second floor has four square windows and a central oval window. The first floor has five windows, with the center window featuring a narrow architrave surround, a small panel above with a carved urn, a cornice, and a moulded pediment. The apron of this window is recessed with balusters. The ground floor has four windows and a central door. The door is a six flush panelled type with a rectangular fanlight above, showcasing an arched radiating and wreathed glazing pattern in wrought iron. Both the door and windows are set in recessed, flush panelled reveals, flanked by engaged, fluted, Roman Doric columns supporting an entablature. This entablature is semi-circular in plan, featuring a well fluted frieze and a moulded, denticulated, bracketed cornice. There are four moulded stone steps leading up to the entrance, with an 18th-century wrought iron railing sweeping up in a curve to the wall of the house, complete with a scroll terminal. A similar railing on the right side has been restored. The east side of the house displays brick and coursed flint in alternating bands, along with an external chimney.
Inside, the building contains a good staircase with an open string, scrolled tread ends, turned balusters, turned newels, and a moulded handrail with swept junctions. There are also good fireplaces present.
Nos 44 to 74 (even) and Nos 78 to 84 (even) form a fine group with this building.
