Description
The building is a training college, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with later alterations. It is constructed of red brick on a stone rubble base, with a painted stone band between the floors. Stone quoins are present, along with a moulded and coved eaves cornice. The roof is of old tile, with a tall banded chimney stack to the left and three hipped roof dormers. The front elevation features a shallow, two-story canted bay to the left, with a broken eaves cornice and sash windows in architrave surrounds; the ground floor sashes were originally sliding but are now sealed. The first floor has three windows with intact glazing bars, the window above the door being framed by a painted stone surround with plain scrolls. A late 18th-century red brick extension is attached to the right, with a similar cornice to the main block and a lower ground floor due to the sloping site. This extension has a front elevation to Dolphin Street with two gables and an external chimney stack. The garden front, facing St Anne's Street, is of chequer brick with ashlar quoins and a projecting stone plinth with moulded coping, a heavy moulded bracketed eaves cornice, and three sash windows with later glazing in moulded architrave frames. A further two-story extension on this side features four recessed sash windows on each floor, with intact glazing bars and flush frames on the ground floor, plus a stair light. The interior includes a panelled common room with a later 18th-century plaster ceiling and a warden's office with fluted pilaster panelling. A staircase has turned balusters, a fluted columnar newel, and a moulded handrail, with remains of a circa 1700 staircase consisting of two short flights. The roof is a six-bay trussed butt purlin structure.
